Dark Moon & New Moon Energies

Most people do not know or understand that there is a difference between the dark moon and the new moon. The dark moon usually occurs approximately 24 hours prior to the renewed moon (new moon). It is the period of time where there is no sunlight shining behind the moon. During ancient times it was considered the last phase of the moon. (This phases usually begins 48 to 72 hours before the renewed moon phase begins.)

In Greece the dark moon was called the old moon. In India, it was called Amavasya which means no moon, meaning no moon is visible. This period is when the moon is in conjunction with the earth and sun, and the moon is then cast into a shadow. Hence the reason why it's called the dark moon.

The Renewed Moon (New Moon) is derived from the Phoenician word chadash/hadash which means to renew or be reborn. It was seen by the Babylonians, Khemites, Nubians, and Persians as the the first visible crescent of the Moon, after conjunction with the Sun. The new moon occurs within the 12° after syzygy. This 12° arc was called uma by the Babylonians and tithi by the Persians.

It was not until NASA and modern astrologists came along and called the dark moon as the new moon on the calendar, that the dark moon became thought of as the new moon.

But both of these moon phases carry different energy, and if we desire to harness and use that energy fully, we need to understand this and make the distinction.

It is believed that because there is no light being reflected onto the Earth at night, spiritual activity increases and is more powerful during a dark moon. Unlike the full moon which tends to usher in more emotionally charged and chaotic energy, the dark moon tends to lend a calm and quiet energy. If you are mindful of this, you might notice that most people sleep better during the time of the dark moon, than they do during a full moon, which seems to cause more restless sleep.

Dark moon energy is good for change, breaking old ties, and breaking addictions. Dark moon energy is also good for meditation, reflection, soul searching, and shadow work. This energy is also great for protection work and to rid yourself of negative energy in and around you. It is the best time for charging your protection crystals, such as Black Tourmaline, Black Kyanite, Hematite, Amethyst, Selenite, Smoky Quartz, Onyx, and Obsidian, as well as charging water for protection. You can set protective boundaries around yourself, your loved ones, or your home through the dark moon energy.

As mentioned above, the dark moon energy is also the perfect time for shadow work. Shadow is the term used to describe the things we usually we cannot see in ourselves, and often it is the parts we try to hide or deny. Shadow work can lead to healing, creative energy, self love, self truth, and personal awakening. You can use this energy to look into your own self and begin to self heal.

When thinking about the moon, we usually only think about the energy of. the full and new moon (with that being the dark moon). Modern science, religion, and new age witchcraft has made the dark moon evil. But as we can see, the dark moon has very positive and powerful healing energies.

And usually when speaking of the full moon and the renewed moon energies, it is taken for granted that the full moon energy is stronger. When in all actuality, we just need to think of it as different. The full moon is all about receiving, harvesting (the moon is considered ripe when it is full), and fullness, while the renewed moon is about rebirth, renewal, and beginnings. And as mentioned above, the dark moon is about endings. The waxing and waning that happens between these three phases builds up to these powerful energies.

For those that aren't aware, waxing is the period from darkness to fullness, and waning is the period from fullness to darkness.

The renewing of the moon, because of its powerful regenerating and renewing energies, is the perfect time for turning inward and thinking about our experiences and re-evaluating where we need to start over again.
The renewed moon is symbolic of second chances, new paths, and do overs. This is why renewed moon energy is perfect for meditation, journal writing, and organizing ourselves. The renewed moon's energy, purifies, purges, and cleanses, helping us see clearly how we need to move forward.

Tapping into the energy of the renewed moon can support our dreams and desires. It can allow us to harness its energy to fulfill our visions.  It is the perfect time to make positive changes to our own behavior.  This is the time to take action in our lives and take the necessary steps towards setting goals. During the renewed moon is the perfect time for charging our manifestation crystals, such as Amethyst, Citrine, Carnelian, Amber, Rose Quartz, Iolite, Malachite, and Moonstone.

We can view the dark moon as the time for planting, the renewed moon as the time for growing, and the full moon as the time for harvesting  Because we are nature, aligning our energy with the energy of nature imbues us with more resources, life force, and creative power.
